President Obama Unveils Homestar For Energy Efficient Replacement Windows

President Obama announced today some of the details for the new Homestar Program or what we like to call Cash for Caulkers Program. Its a rebate like program styled after the Cash for Clunkers Program.

Minnesota Homeowners could be eligible for up to $3,000 in rebates for purchases of energy efficient product upgrades like Replacement Windows.

Why Are Replacement Windows Part Of The Homestar Program?

For middle-class families, this program will help them save hundreds of dollars a year in energy costs while improving the comfort and value of their most important investment – their homes. In addition, the program would help reduce our economy’s dependence on oil and support the development of an energy efficiency services sector in our economy.

How Will The Homestar Rebate Work For Replacement Windows?

Under the Homestar plan Minnesota Homeowners interested in Replacement Windows would collect a point-of-sale rebate. Point-of-sale means Western Construction, Inc. would be able to give you the rebate in at the time you ordered your new Mn Replacement Windows. The rebate would come off the top of the contract price. Western Construction would then be reimbursed by the federal government.

What Kind Of Rebate Can We Get For Replacing Our Old Drafty Minnesota Windows?

Silver Star is what their calling the first level of rebates  available for Replacement Windows. Under the Silver Star plan Minnesota Homeowners would be eligible for up to $1,500 for a variety of energy saving home improvements including Replacement Windows. There will be a maximum rebate of $3,000 per MN home.

There is a more comprehensive rebate program called Gold Star. Under Gold Star MN homeowners would be eligible for up to a $3,000 rebate  for a whole-house energy audit and retrofit tailored to reach a 20% energy savings. Additional rebates will be available for energy savings over 20%.

Can I get The Rebate From Any MN Replacement Window Contractor?

The program would require that contractors be certified to perform efficiency installations. Independent quality assurance providers would conduct field audits after work is completed to ensure proper installation so consumers receive energy savings from their upgrades. States would oversee the implementation of quality assurance to ensure that the program was moving the industry toward more robust standards and comprehensive energy retrofit practices.
